KORAGA KORATI
Koraga and Korati are worshipped by the members belonging to Koraga and other scheduled communities in almost primitive form of shrine.Crude stones are erected under a banyan tree and offerings of alcohol and cock are made. A legend narrates the origin of spirit thus. Koraga and Korati are born in heaven and brought up by Parvathi and Parameswara. Korati wanted to see Tulunad. She wanted a jakina coloured saree, silken blouse and breast band , basket made of perna tree. She held nekki leaf and ciinkru broon-stick in left hand and sickle in her right. A thread is tied to the karimani of parvathi. Holding the other end of the thread, Korati and Koraga descended from the heaven. They crossed many rivers and brooks and came to a buudu (manorial house of a chieftain). They asked the master of house to provide a place for them. In return they promised to protect hunters in the forest, fishes in the pond, and pregnant women in the cowshed etc., The owner first refused to accept the new spirits in the shrines. But when the master began to experience a severe stomach pain he offered place for the new spirits. But no meat was offered. During the marriage ceremony of his daughter the spirits appeared in dreams and demanded meat dishes and thereafter a special place was set aside for the offerings of meat. Koraga Korati are propitiated by the members of the other communities also for the protection of domestic and crops.
